Fish oil labels can be misleading. A “1,000 mg fish oil” softgel might contain only 300 mg of actual EPA and DHA. Here is how to read the label and dose correctly.
EPA vs DHA: What Each Does
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid)
- Primary role: inflammation balance and mood
- The omega-3 most associated with depression and anxiety support
- The one cardiologists look at for triglyceride management
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)
- Primary role: brain and eye health
- Major structural component of brain tissue
- Important during pregnancy and early development
How Much Do You Need?
| Goal | Combined EPA+DHA |
|---|---|
| General health | 500–1,000 mg |
| Cardiovascular support | 1,000–2,000 mg |
| Triglyceride management | 2,000–4,000 mg (under medical supervision) |
| Cognitive/mood support | 1,000–2,000 mg (EPA-predominant) |
Reading the Label Correctly
Look past the “total fish oil” number. Find the EPA and DHA breakdown on the supplement facts panel:
- Fish oil per softgel: 1,000 mg (this is the oil — not the active compounds)
- EPA: 680 mg
- DHA: 260 mg
- Total omega-3s: 940 mg (this is what matters)
A product advertising “1,200 mg fish oil” with only 360 mg EPA+DHA is not a good value.
Cost Per Effective Dose
This is where smart comparison matters. Use this formula:
Cost per effective dose = Price ÷ (Servings × EPA+DHA per serving in grams)
A $30 bottle with 120 servings of 1,040 mg EPA+DHA costs $0.24 per gram of omega-3. A $35 bottle with 90 servings of 1,100 mg EPA+DHA costs $0.35 per gram.
The “cheaper” bottle may not be cheaper at all.
Triglyceride vs Ethyl Ester
- Triglyceride form: Natural form, better absorbed, slightly more expensive
- Ethyl ester: Concentrated form, needs fat for absorption, often cheaper per gram
Choose triglyceride form if budget allows — the absorption difference is meaningful.
Timing
Always take omega-3 with a fat-containing meal. Without dietary fat, absorption drops significantly.
The Bottom Line
Aim for 1,000–2,000 mg combined EPA+DHA daily. Read the label — not the front, the supplement facts. Compare cost per gram of EPA+DHA, not per softgel.
